Games Workshop: WHITE DWARF reborn?

Greetings, y'all!

Interesting news on the Games Workshop front... Apparently, GW has decided to revitalize their own monthly hobby magazine "White Dwarf" which has become increasingly boring in the last couple of years. 

Some claim it to be the "most expensive advertising flyer" in the world and very few people I know actually subscribe or even read the magazine. I subscribed only because I have them all starting from issue #1 and I want to keep the collection complete. You know - it's what men do. 

But frankly - White Dwarf was or rather still is devistatingly boring. I am usually through "reading" it within 5 minutes. At a price of 7 Euros a copy not the cheapest activity. We all know what is in it: The new army is "game tested" and obliterates some older army so we all have to buy it. Right? Yeah. Back in the old days, White dwarf was much more fun. Terrain articles, painting articles, even articles on the now lost art of COLLECTING miniatures... But then again, the old days are always better...

Yet there is hope. Games Workshop has established a "new team" for the White dwarf. Eight guys and a gal have announced to do things differently from now on. Starting with the September 22nd issue, things will change. New cover, new layout, new content, new shiny & glossy paper. I sincerely hope, that this goes more into a hobby friendly direction rather than the recent "we have to defend our intellectual property at all cost - even if it kills the hobby" route. 

GW says "Everything is new - nothing stays the same" - but only the printing of reader supplied pictures seems new in the announced list. Well, let's stay positive and let them surprise us :) 

The only fear I have: Price increase. We shall see...

Nevertheless, I for one am looking forward to the new issue. Change is good. In the case of White Dwarf - its about time. Let's all hope that the changes are fresh, radical and focussed on us - the hobbyists. I will welcome the new issue of White Dwarf with open arms. And hope to be captivated for more than 5 minutes ;)

Interessante Neuigkeiten von der Games Workshop Front. So wie es aussieht, hat GW entschieden das in den letzten Jahren zunehmend langweilig gewordene "White Dwarf" Magazin einem Facelift zu unterziehen. 

Einige nennen den White Dwarf "die wahrscheinlich teuerste Werbebroschüre der Welt" und nur sehr wenige Leute, die ich kenne lesen, geschweige denn abonnieren das Magazin. Ich bin nur Abonnent, weil ich seit #1 alle Ausgaben habe und die Sammlung komplett sein MUSS. Ihr wisst - Männer machen sowas. 

Aber wenn wir mal ehrlich sind: Der White Dwarf ist unglaublich langweilig geworden. Ich bin normalerweise in 5 Minuten mit dem "Lesen" durch. Bei einem Preis von 7 Euros pro Heft nicht gerade ein billiges Vergnügen. Wir wissen alle, was drinsteht: Die neue Armee feegt eine ältere Armee gnadenlos vom Tisch, damit wir die kaufen wollen sollen müssen. Richtig? Yeah.... Damals, in der guten alten Zeit war der White Dwarf noch spannend. Platten bauen, Malartikel und sogar Artikel über die tote Kunst des SAMMELNS von Miniaturen gab es. Aber die guten alten Zeiten sind wohl sowieso immer die Besten... 

Aber es gibt Hoffnung. Games Workshop hat ein neues "Team" für den White Dwarf aus dem Boden gestampft. Acht Jungs und ein Mädel wollen Dinge anders machen als bisher. Mit der Oktoberausgabe (22. September) wird's anders: Neues Cover, neues Layout, neuer Inhalt, neues, hochglänzendes Papier. Ich hoffe nur, dass es mehr Richtung Hobby und weniger Richtung "wir müssen unsere Marke um jeden Preis schützen - selbst wenn es das Hobby vernichtet" wird.  

GW schreibt "alles ist neu - nichts bleibt wie es war" - bis auf die abgedruckten Leserbilder findet man in der Ankündigung aber noch nichts neues - lassen wir uns also mal überraschen.

Die einzige Angst, die bleibt: Preiserhöhung... Wir werden sehen.

Wie dem auch sei, ich freue mich auf die neue Ausgabe. Veränderung ist GUT. Im Fall vom White Dwarf wirds echt Zeit. Hoffen wir also, dass die Änderungen neu, radikal und auf uns Nerds ausgerichtet sind. Ich werde das neue Magazin mit offenen Armen empfangen und hoffen, dass es mich länger als 5 Minuten fesselt. ;)
