MXpression's Authentic Metal DVD with Adam Wilder
OK, masterminis.net is supposed to be where we learn to be a better painter... In the last couple of days it was more the place where we could win some free stuff :)
Well, let's try to counteract this for a moment! When I was sitting on the train to Warsaw to visit the Hussar 2012 painting competition I watched Adam Wilder's most recent DVD called "Authentic Metal" available at MXpression.Review
Painting miniatures on a competitive level requires a lot of practice, experience and a mastery of a lot of techniques.
The same is true for painting realistic vehicles, however, I find these techniques much easier to master - it is hard to "really mess up" a vehicle when painting, and really easy to mess up a miniature in a single brushstroke (trust me, i know).
Over the next couple of months I will review some of my books, mags and DVDs for you - so you can make an educated decision as to whether or not it is worth buying the one or the other material.
Among my most recent aquisitions is the MXpression DVD "Authentic Metal" by Adam Wilder. For those of you that do not know Adam - he is one of the demi-gods of vehicle painting. In the past he worked with "Mig" Jimenez on some projects and now he published the DVD at hand.
During the 1h40m DVD, Adam showcases the following techniques/effects:
- textures
- carbon steel
- machined steel
- red oxid primer
- rusty exhaust
- burnt aluminium
The part about textures - as important as it is - is nothing new from anything else I have seen so far. BUT it is necessary, if you really think about creating realistic looking models. It kinda completes the rest of the DVD.Adam shows two different finishes on a German and a US tank.
The techniques covered in the section about red oxide primer paintjobs - although I find it the most estatically intriguing part - are the ones I find to be "most standard". Most of the learning materials that I own show these techniques in one way or another. The sections about carbon steel, machined steel and burnt aluminium, however, introduced me to some completely new techniques. Especially the part about burnt aluminium was kinda cool as you get to work with new materials (namely leaf metal).
Overall Quality of the DVD
I find the DVD to be very well produced. Although Adam does not really work on a full model but rather on some demo probs in order to teach his techniques, it is easy to follow and understand.
Absolutely annoying, however is the background music which in parts is waaaaay to loud - to the point where you have to concentrate on what Adam is saying.... Less (or no music) would have been more in this case. The Japanese fellow is barely audible over the loud music in parts of the video.
The DVD comes with an English, German and Japanese soundtrack (hey, that covers 100% of my language skills! BAAAAM!) All soundtracks are added in post production and of good quality. In addition, you can find English, Dutch (with Belgium Flag :)), Italian and Spanish subtitles. I think I will go for Japanese sound with Italian subtitles next. Yay :)

So?
Well, at a retail of €13,50 ($24,99) I feel that the DVD offers very good value for money.
I feel that it is an advanced technique DVD which leaves the novice painters with a lot of questions. Therefore I would NOT recommend this DVD for an absolute beginner. But once you got the basics down, this DVD will surely show you new ways of painting realistic looking models.
If I were to make this DVD better, I would lose the music and have Adam work on full models instead of demo props (e.g, the awesome tanks that you see in the trailer to the DVD...) - but its a DVD about techniques, not about painting A particular tank. And the techniques are really very well covered.
If you are interested in learing additional techniques for creating your own realisticly weathered vehicles, I would definitely recommend this DVD to you. I would give it 8 out of 10 possible masterminis.net points.

OK, masterminis.net soll laut Motto der Ort sein, "where we learn to be a better painter... " In den letzten Tagen war es mehr der Ort, wo man am besten Stuff gewinnen konnte :)
Lasst uns diesem Trend also etwas entgegenwirken. Als ich im Zug nach Polen zum Hussar 2012 Malwettbewerb saß, habe ich Adam Wilder's neueste DVD namens "Authentic Metal" (erhältlich bei MXpression) angesehen. Hier mein Review dazu.Review
Das Bemalen von Miniaturen auf Wettbewerbsniveau erfordert eine Menge an Übung, Erfahrung und das Meistern einer ganzen Menge von Techniken.
Das gleiche gilt sicher auch für die Bemalung realistisch anmutender Fahrzeuge, aber ich finde, dass die Techniken hier deutlich einfacher zu erlernen sind. Es ist schwer, ein Fahrzeug durch Bemaltechniken komplett zu entstellen, bei einer Miniatur braucht es manchmal nur einen Pinselstrich und alles ist hin (glaubt mir, ich weis wovon ich spreche :D)
Ich persönlich sehe mir total gerne gut "verwitterte" Fahrzeuge an. Sehr gerne. Also habe ich über die Jahre eine ganze Bibliothek von Büchern, Magazinen und DVDs mit dem Thema "Realistische Fahrzeugbemalung" angesammelt.
Über die nächsten Monate mochte ich euch einige meine Bücher, Magazine und DVDs vorstellen - damit ihr euch gut informiert dazu entscheiden könnt, das eine oder andere davon selbst zu kaufen.
Eine meiner neuesten Anschaffungen ist die MXpression DVD "Authentic Metal" mit Adam Wilder. Für die unter euch, die Adam nicht kennen - er ist so eine Art Halbgott der Fahrzeugmaler. In der Vergangenheit hat er u.a. an DVD Projekten mit "Mig" Jimenez gearbeitet.
Im Lauf der 1h40m DVD stellt Adam die folgenden Techniken vor:
- Texturen
- Carbon Steel*
- Machined Steel*
- Rote Oxidgrundierung
- verrosteter Auspuff
- verbranntes Aluminium
Der Teil über die Texturen - so wichtig wie er auch sein mag - ist nichts Neues. Aber er ist Notwendig, wenn man wirklich realistisch aussehende Modelle bemalen will. Daher rundet dieser Teil die DVD sehr gut ab.
Die Techniken die in dem Teil über die rote Rostfarben-Grundierung gezeigt werden sind auch schon so oder ähnlich in vielen meiner anderen Materialien vorgestellt worden. Ich finde diesen Teil im Ergebnis übrigens optisch am Ansprechensten von allen. (aber das ist ja bekanntlich Geschmacksache).
Die anderen Teile zeigen jedoch für mich bislang völlig unbekannte Techniken. Besonders der Teil mit dem Verbrannten Aluminium hat es mir angetan (hier wird mit Blattmetall gearbeitet).
Qualität der DVD
Ich finde die DVD sehr gut gemacht. Obwohl Adam nicht an vollständigen Modellen malt, sondern an Demo-Teilen werden die Techniken sehr gut und verständlich rübergebracht.
Absolut nervig hingegen ist die Hintergrundmusik, die in Teilen so laut ist, dass man sich auf das, was Adam so erzahlt schon sehr konzentrieren muss. Weniger (oder gar keine Musik) ware hier sicher mehr gewesen. Den Japanischen Sprecher kann man oftmals wirklich kaum verstehen. :(
Die DVD kommt mit Englischem, Deutschen und Japanischem Soundtrack (yay! 100% Sprachabdeckung!). Alle Soundtracks sind nachvertont und in guter Qualität. Zusätzlich gibt es Englische, Holländische, Italienische und Spanische Untertitel. Ich glaube, als nächstes gucke ich mir die DVD in Japanisch mit italienischen Untertiteln an. Yay :)
Fazit
Ich denke bei einem Verkaufspreis von €13,50 ($24,99) bietet die DVD einen absolut angemessenen Gegenwert.
Für Anfänger ist diese DVD nur bedingt geeignet, weil viele notwendige Grundlagen nicht erklärt werden. Aber sobald man die Grundlagen woanders erworben hat, wird diese DVD mit Sicherheit neue Möglichkeiten der realistischen Fahrzeugbemalung ermöglichen.
Wenn ich die DVD besser machen könnte, würde ich auf die Musik verzichten und Adam an echten Modellen arbeiten lassen (z.B. den coolen Tank am Anfang des DVD Trailers) - aber es ist eine DVD über Techniken und nicht über die Bemalung EINES kompletten Tanks. Und die Techniken sind super erklärt.
Wer also neue Techniken zur Bemalung realistisch anmutender Fahrzeuge erlernen möchte, dem kann ich die DVD nur wärmstens empfehlen. Ich würde der DVD 8 von 10 möglichen masterminis.net Punkte geben :)
