Hussar 2012 - Oct. 6th, Warsaw, Poland

Greetings, everyone!

This site is about how to learn to be a better painter. And what do we do when we think we are ready? Yes! We go to miniature painting competitions!

Many of you know about the Games Workshop "Golden Demon" competitions - but there are many, many more out there - some of them absolutely fantastic, too.

One of them is the Hussar 2012 which will take place in Warsaw, Poland on October 6th this year. It is the third event of this kind - and a rather large one, too. I personally have neither been to Poland nor to a painting competition specifically, but I am really lookin forward to going this year.

The first prize is something special: A paid return ticket to the Crystal Brush competition in the USA where the winner goes home with 10.000$! All of the other trophies look spectecular, too and will look great in anyones display case.

The Hussar website just came back after some technical issues. The gallery is still gone at the moment, but all the relevant information about when to be where can be found there.

Diese Webseite hat das Motto "where we learn to be a better painter". Und was machen wir, wenn wir denken, dass wir gut genug sind? Richtig! Wir fahren auf Malwettbewerbe!

Viele von uns kennen die Games Workshop "Golden Demon" Wettbewerbe - aber es gibt viele, viele andere - einige von ihnen sind auch absolut fantastisch. 

Einer davon ist der Hussar 2012 welcher dieses Jahr am 06. Oktober in Warschau, Polen stattfinden wird. Es ist der dritte Wettbewerb seiner Art - und ein ziemlich großer. Ich war noch nie in Polen noch weniger bei dem Hussar, aber ich freue mich tierisch, dieses Jahr dort hinzufahren. 

Der erste Preis ist was ganz besonderes: Ein bezahltes Flugticket zum Crystal Brush Wettbewerb in die USA, wo der Gewinner mit 10.000$ nach hause geht! Die Trophäen des Hussar sehen auch spektakulär aus und machen sich bestimmt gut in jeder Vitrine.

Die Hussar Webseite ist gerade nach ein paar technischen Problemen wieder online gegangen. Die Gallerie fehlt zwar leider noch, aber alle relevanten Informationen (wann muss ich wo sein) findet ihr dort.

KINETIC7 - free miniature magazine

Hello y'all!

A new, free downloadable magazine called KINETIC7 has been launched recently. The focus is skirmish games, but it also features great tipps & tricks on painting, converting and all the other good stuff that makes us all so nerdy :D

Some of the content includes:

- Features on Alkemy and 1650
- Making plaster scenery Part 1
- Sculpting a miniature Part 1
- Painting tutorials
- Q&A with Angel Giraldez
- ...and much more

Check it out at this link, I think it really came out very nicely. It looks a lot like the old Rackham Cry-Havocs. And that can only be a good thing ;)

Hallöle!

Ein neues, kostenloses runterladbares Magazin namens KINETIC7 ist kürzlich an den Start gegangen. Der Focus des Magazins ist zwar Skirmish Games, aber es gibt auch eine Menge Tipps & Tricks bezüglich Bemalung, Umbau und all den anderen Dingen, die uns nerdy machen, zu sehen. 

Eine Übersicht über ein paar Themen der Erstausgabe:

Wall of shame

As some of you know, I have just moved to Berlin. Some stuff is still in boxes, but my miniatures are all put away in many a shelf now... And as I opened the box called "unfinished miniatures, WIP" I thought about all the dreams I had for them: To bepart of my "wall of fame" one day. 

But all they ever got to be was to be frozen in the continuous state of endless Work In Progress... So let me show you my "Wall of Shame" Miniatures - the dirty 18. Some of them are about 6 years old now. Many of them are workshop miniatures that I pledged to finish some day...  At least I have them in a very visible and prominent spot in my hobby room as a constant reminder to finish something some day...

My "wall of shame" - The dirty 18

Wie einige von euch wissen, bin ich gerade nach Berlin gezogen. Einiges von meinem Zeugs ist noch in Kisten, aber meine Miniaturen sind alle in irgendwelchen Regalen untergekommen... Und als ich die Kiste mit der Aufschrift "unfinished miniatures / WIP" öffnete, dachte ich an all die Träume und Wünsche die ich für diese Miniaturen hatten: Eines Tages sollten sie meine "Hall of Fame" begründen.

Aber alles, was sie bekamen war im ewigen Zustand des sich-im-bearbeitet-werden-befindens (WIP) eingefroren zu sein... Das ist sie also, meine "Wall of Shame" (Wand der Schande) - die dreckigen 18. Einige von denen sind schon 6 Jahre alt. Viele sind Workshop-Figuren, die ich versprochen habe, irgendwann mal fertig zu stellen. Immerhin haben diese Minis in meinem neuen Hobbyraum einen sehr sichtbaren Platz bekommen - als ständige Ermahnung, auch ab und zu mal was fertig zu stellen...

Unpacking Dark Vengeance / Sturm der Vergeltung ausgepackt

GWINDI tabletop store seems to not have gotten GW's memo about not showing the content of the box before Release Day.... Lucky us! 

The video is in German but gives a fair overview over whats inside the box.

Tutorial Tuesday #1 - Mold casting your own resin parts

Greetings, my most excellent painters! 

It is finally up - the first ever "Tutorial Tuesday" video. On Wednesday morning... As some of you know, my real computer blew up two weeks ago and I am now working on a very slow notebook... And since the tutorial video ended up being almost 40 minutes long, the rendering time was painful. The first of three parts went up at around 2am in the morning. I started the second part and went to bed ;) 

But that is all history - the vids are up. Next time I will prepare them for monday, I did not expect to a) go so long on the explanation and b) that the rendering takes sooooo long on the notebook. 

The first tutorial shows how to use a low-tech-approach on mold casting your own resin parts. No vaccuum or pressur chaimbers, just you and the materials! It still works very well for me.

Grüße, meine exzellenten Maler!

Es ist endlich hochgeladen - das erste "Tutorial Tuesday" Video. Am Mittwoch morgen... Wie einige von euch wissen, ist mein echter Rechner vor zwei Wochen in die Luft geflogen und ich arbeite nun an einem sehr langsamen Notebook. Und da die Tutorial Videos am ende fast 40 Minuten lang geworden sind, war die Render-Zeit recht schmerzvoll. Der erste der drei Teile wurde gegen 2 Uhr morgens hochgeladen. Den zweiten hab ich dann nur noch angeworfen und bin ins Bett ;) 

Aber das ist alles Geschichte - die Videos sind oben. Das nächste Video werde ich für Montag vorbereiten. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass ich a) so lange für das Tutorial brauche und b) dass das Rendering soooo lange brauchen würde. 

Das erste Tutorial zeigt einen low-Tech-Ansatz, wie man seine eigenen Resin-Teile in Formen gießt. Keine Vakuum-Kammern, keine Druckkammern, nur ihr und das Material! Für mich klappt das immer gut!

Wenn IHR jetzt Fragen zum malen habt - welche auch immer - bitte hinterlasst diese in den Kommentaren unten. Vielleicht wird das dann das Thema der nächsten Woche!
